Sharpen your child’s chess skills with National Master Ryan Young at the Cambridge Community Center. This 8-week session consists of 90-minute classes aimed at setting a strong chess foundation through instruction, exercises, and guided play.

Class Details:

• Class Time: Saturdays: 10:30am - 12:00pm

• Dates: May 9 – July 11 (no class on May 23 and July 4)

• Location: Cambridge Community Center, Basement Classroom, 5 Callender St, Cambridge

• Age Range: 7-12 years old

• Rating Rage: 700 - 1200 (Students should be familiar with how the pieces move and basic rules.)

Class Topics:

• Intro to Thinking Techniques (Spotting checks, captures and threats)

• Basic Attack and Defense (How to coordinate pieces and deal with opponents threats)

• Understanding Opening Principles (and why they matter)

• Mastering Basic Checkmates (King+Queen vs King, King+Rook vs King, etc)

• Developing Tactical Vision (Forks, Pins, Discoveries and how to spot them)

• Endgame Themes (Passed Pawns, Using the King, Opposition, etc)
